Joseph Johnson of the September 2012 I Squad was humbled and inspired when he met Errol, a Satanist-turned-Jesus-lover in South Africa. Born in Swaziland, Errol had a fierce determination that had allowed him to live comfortably and accomplish anything he set his mind to. But one day when he was 28, Errol heard the voice of the Lord. And what happened next wrecked Errol’s comfortable life.

Stirring from sleep, Errol hears his name in the middle of the night. Too tired to answer, he ignores it. But he hears it again, and again.

"What do you want?" he says, turning toward his roommate in the dark.
"I didn't say anything,” his roommate replies back.
Confused, Errol attempts to go back to sleep. He hears his name called a fourth and final time. This time, it’s different. He realizes who is calling his name. God. Immediately, Errol sees a vision.
His car is overturned on the side of the road with its tires in the air. His body is on a rock next to it, naked and bloody. Then, a bolt of lightning strikes the rock and Errol wakes up. He hears the voice tell him this will happen tomorrow at half past three.
Hardly sleeping the rest of the night, Errol spends the next day sweaty and anxious. He has a meeting and knows he must drive. He calls all of his friends and family looking for another way of getting there.
Unable to find a ride, he resolves, “It was just a dream, right?”
Errol gets in his car and heads to his four o’clock meeting. Shortly after, he comes to the road from his dream, and the vision flashes through his eyes again. He is blinded by the vision and loses control of his car.
Suddenly, Errol realizes he is lying on the side of the road, unable to move his legs or arms. Among the chaos and fear, Errol has another vision. This time, he is looking down at the scene of the accident and at his lifeless body below.
Slowly fading farther away, Errol knows where he is headed. He is overcome with fear, knowing it is not a good place. He hears the voice from the night before again, telling him to pray the prayer his grandfather taught him when he was a young boy.
He recites what he remembers, "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."
Suddenly, Errol finds himself back in his body, looking up at the sky, gasping for air. He realizes the voice is real. The God his grandfather told him about is real. And Errol receives Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. And then again, he is out of consciousness.

The next day, Errol wakes up in the hospital. His spinal cord has been severed at the C6 and C7 vertebrae,
paralyzing him from the neck down. His lungs have collapsed. The doctor tell him he only has three months to live.
A month later, Errol is determined to breathe on his own. He tells the doctors to take him off the ventilator. Three seconds pass, four, he still can’t breathe. Five, suddenly his lungs kick in. He takes his first breath. His second. He is breathing on his own for the first time since the accident.
Sixteen years later, Errol tells his story as one of rejoicing. To him, a few short years of temporary and relatively mild sorrow and pain on earth is no comparison to the eternal and everlasting life he will know in heaven with God.
Errol’s story is remarkable. But it is not his story that draws visitors to his room everyday, it is simply his joy. Errol’s genuine and abundant joy is infectious. He can find the positive in any circumstance despite his unfortunate situation.
When people see Errol, they see his joy is only because of Jesus. It was knowing Jesus that kept him from giving up, that kept him going.
It was only when everything was taken away, that Errol realized God was the only thing he had left. And that God is enough.
Is God your everything? What do you need to surrender to him today?
